The Stone Masterpiece of Patan Durbar Square

Krishna Mandir is a magnificent 17th-century Hindu temple situated in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Patan Durbar Square, Nepal. Built in 1637 by King Siddhi Narasimha Malla, it is the first specimen of Shikhara-style stone architecture in Nepal.

Unlike most Nepalese temples constructed of brick and timber, Krishna Mandir is built entirely of finely chiseled dark stone. Its interior pillars and exterior friezes are meticulously carved with bas-relief sculptures depicting legendary episodes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana epics.

Key Highlights

  • Rare Shikhara-style architecture constructed entirely from solid carved stone blocks without mortar.
  • Exquisite friezes narrating major battles and stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana.
  • 21 gilded spires gleaming atop the stone pyramid structure.
  • Electric midnight celebrations during Krishna Janmashtami drawing tens of thousands of chanting devotees.

Krishna Mandir: Worship, Architecture & Festival Guide

The deity and daily ritual of Krishna Mandir, its building tradition, its main festival, and the etiquette expected of visitors.

A King's Divine Vision

King Siddhi Narasimha Malla reportedly commissioned the temple after seeing Lord Krishna and Radha standing in a dream at the exact palace courtyard spot.

It survived the devastating 2015 earthquake with remarkable structural resilience, standing tall as a testament to classical Newari masonry.

Krishna Janmashtami: Celebrating Lord Krishna

Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with immense fervor in August or September. The square fills with thousands of pilgrims fasting, singing devotional bhajans, and waiting for midnight when the King's descendants or leaders traditionally offer formal prayers.

Etiquette & Visitor Guidelines

Climbing upper stone tiers is restricted during peak festival days to prevent damage to delicate carvings.
