The Architectural & Spiritual Gem of Patan

The Char Narayan Temple, also locally referred to as Jagannarayan or Pyamha Narandya, is one of the oldest surviving structures in Patan Durbar Square. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his four-fold form, the temple stands as a masterwork of historic Newari brick masonry and intricate wood craftsmanship.

Constructed on a brick plinth with a two-tiered pagoda roof, the temple houses a central quadruple deity statue depicting four forms of Lord Vishnu facing the cardinal directions. It serves as an essential shrine within the UNESCO World Heritage Monument Zone of Patan.

Key Highlights

  • Masterpiece four-faced central stone image of Lord Vishnu (dating prior to 1565 AD).
  • Elaborately carved roof struts depicting traditional deities and classic Newari erotic iconography.
  • A stone pillar directly facing the temple topped with a bronze figure of Garuda, Vishnu's divine mount.

Char Narayan Temple: Worship, Architecture & Festival Guide

The deity and daily ritual of Char Narayan Temple, its building tradition, its main festival, and the etiquette expected of visitors.

Malla Dynasty Origins & Modern Resilience

Built in 1565 AD under the reign of King Purandar Singh Malla, the temple is a textbook example of classical Malla-era pagoda architecture.

During the devastating earthquake of April 2015, the temple suffered complete collapse. Through joint efforts by local craftsmen, KVPT, and WMF, it was painstakingly reconstructed using original salvaged wooden elements and completed in 2020 with concealed seismic reinforcement.

Haribodhini Ekadashi & Vaikuntha Ekadashi

The temple sees its peak gatherings during Vaishnava sacred days, particularly Haribodhini Ekadashi and Krishna Janmashtami, when local devotees queue across the square to offer yellow flowers, butter lamps, and prayers.

Etiquette & Visitor Guidelines

Leather articles like belts, bags, and shoes must be removed before stepping onto the elevated inner sanctum.

Photography is allowed around the exterior courtyard and complex, but inner sanctum photography during active worship is restricted.
