A Full Moon for the Buddha

Buddha Jayanti falls on the full moon of Baisakh and commemorates three events in the Buddha's life: his birth, his enlightenment, and his passing. For Nepalis it is also a celebration of the country's role as the Buddha's birthplace.

Lumbini, in the Terai, is the main pilgrimage destination, but monasteries and stupas across Nepal hold their own observances. Boudhanath and Swayambhunath in Kathmandu are especially atmospheric in the evening, when butter lamps and candles outline the stupas.

Festival Highlights

  • Lumbini hosts the largest official celebrations and attracts pilgrims from across Asia.
  • Boudhanath and Swayambhunath hold evening candlelit processions.
  • Monasteries distribute food and alms to the poor.
  • The day is a public holiday in Nepal.

Buddha Jayanti: History, Rituals & Travel Planning

The origins and observances of Buddha Jayanti, plus practical advice for experiencing it respectfully.

Lumbini and the Spread of Buddhism

The Buddha was born in Lumbini, in present-day Rupandehi District, around the sixth century BCE. The site was rediscovered in the late nineteenth century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a sacred garden and monasteries built by many countries.

Buddhism spread from the Gangetic plain into the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalaya, blending with local traditions. Nepal's Newar Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, and Theravada communities all mark Buddha Jayanti, though with different emphases.

Prayers, Alms and Light

Devotees visit monasteries and stupas to offer flowers, incense, and butter lamps. Monks chant sutras, and laypeople take vows, listen to teachings, and give alms or food to those in need.

In the evening, processions circle the great stupas with candles and oil lamps. At Lumbini, pilgrims meditate in the sacred garden and attend services at the monasteries of different countries.

Visiting Lumbini for Buddha Jayanti

Lumbini is hot in May, with temperatures often above 35°C, so plan walks for early morning and late afternoon. The sacred garden is large and best explored by bicycle or electric cart, and modest dress is expected at all monastic sites.

Book accommodation well ahead, since pilgrimage traffic peaks around the full moon. The atmosphere in the evening is the highlight, but bring mosquito repellent, drinking water, and a torch for walking back after dark.

Buddha Jayanti: When and Where

Buddha Jayanti (बुद्ध जयन्ती) is a buddhist festival observed mainly in Lumbini and nationwide. It falls around May, in the Nepali month of Baisakh, and typically lasts 1 day.

The main day is Buddha Purnima (full moon), when prayers, alms, and candlelit processions takes centre stage. It is a national public holiday, so offices, schools, and many businesses close.

  • Also known as: Buddha Purnima.
  • Significance: Birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of the Buddha.
  • Key ritual: Prayers, alms, and candlelit processions.

Planning Around Buddha Jayanti

Festival dates follow the lunar Bikram Sambat calendar, so the English month range (May) is approximate and can shift by a couple of weeks from year to year. Confirm the current year's date with a local calendar or your hotel before booking transport.

Expect Lumbini and nationwide to be busier than usual in the days around Buddha Purnima (full moon). Book accommodation and long-distance travel early, carry cash, and allow extra time for crowds and road closures.
